Extent of the aurora as of around 11:30 p.m. CDT tonight June 11-12. The red arc is the limit of visibility of the aurora at that hour. Credit: NOAA
Clouds have hidden the night sky at my home, but if you live in the northern U.S. or southern Canada, be on the lookout tonight for northern lights overnight. The Kp index, a measure of magnetic activity high in Earth’s atmosphere, has been at 5, indicating a minor geomagnetic storm in progress.
While minor as of 11 p.m. CDT, that could change. Folks in northern Minnesota and North Dakota with clear skies might get to see a greenish arc and possibly some auroral rays low in the northern sky.
Clouds. Drat. How are you doing this summer Bob?
Hi Mike,
Been busy but looking forward to clear night tonight. Doing lots of hiking and helping my wife after her injury. The transit of Venus was a highlight. How about you?
Didn’t see anything here at the 45th
I was out from 10:50- 11:40 pm
saw severla shooting stars and a few low flying sattelites
no aurora though , bummer
Thanks for reporting in Maggie.
Aurora was clearly visible at 12th 2:00 CET (11th 19:00 CDT) in northern Europe, at least in northern parts of Poland. And it was insanely beautiful.
Hi Chali,
Wow – sounds wonderful! Looks like you were the lucky ones this time. We had clear skies but no aurora here in northern Minn. at least through midnight. I see that activity ticked up a bit around 4 a.m. (CDT) however.
